Let’s get something clear right away — carbs are NOT the bad guys, especially if sustainable weight loss is your goal!
They’ve been demonized in the media for the last what, ten years? Way too many of us have fallen victim to thinking they should cut ALL carbs to support weight loss.
Long story short: don’t do this. You can be friends with carbs & still achieve your weight loss or fitness goals.
When I type “carbs are” into my google search bar, the first thing that pops up is “carbs are bad” — and that’s bad. I’m here to help dispel some of the misinformation. 👊
Yes, it’s true that too many carbs could be responsible for all those extra pounds around your middle, and they’re certainly a major culprit behind obesity and metabolic disorders, but (BIG BUT) those are the ‘bad’ carbs. It’s pretty rare someone reaches obesity levels by overdosing on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Here’s how carbohydrates – when eaten in the right amounts for your body and needs – can support your weight loss / weight management goals:
ENERGY:
Carbs are our most vital source of energy in the body (brain, muscles).
More energy = better workouts, improved performance & more muscle growth
Better workouts + more muscle = more calorie-burning & a higher metabolism to burn fat even while at rest (dreamy, right?!)
FIBRE:
The fibres in carbs are very slow digesting or even indigestible.
Consuming carbs that are high in fibre keeps us full for longer and reduces overeating or binging.
Fibres also absorbs a lot of water, which improves your water intake and in turn support the digestive system.
As a result, fibre intake helps weight loss.
As always, we’re talking about good quality carbs that are rich in nutrients that our bodies use to function optimally.
There are actually two groups of carbs — some of ‘em are great for you, and others not so much. (They really are the Jekyll and Hyde of food 🤣)
The ‘Bad’:
👉 poor quality packaged foods (like pastries, cookies, crackers, chips)
👉 processed carbs
👉 refined sugars
The ‘Good’:
👉 whole foods (like oats, quinoa, beans, yams)
👉 fruits
👉 veggies
