Eating yeast… isn’t that gross or bad for you or something?! You’d think so! But on the contrary, nutritional yeast is super good for you.
Nutritional yeast is sourced from whey, blackstrap molasses or wood pulp.
It has a cheesey-type of flavor and texture, making it a great addition to sprinkle dry on popcorn or to use in dishes where cheese might typically be used. Nutritional yeast flakes can be purchased at most health food or whole foods stores (usually in the bulk section) and may be one of the best additions to your diet in terms of nutrition and taste!
Nutritional yeast is very different from both bakers yeast and brewers yeast.
Baker’s yeast is still active and could grow inside your stomach and deprive you of nutrients. Brewer’s yeast is inactive, but has a distinctly bitter taste. Nutritional yeast on the other hand, is inactive yeast – so there are no concerns with regards to yeast sensitivities or issues with overgrowth of yeast in the body (candida)*, it has a great taste, AND it’s super healthy for us. WIN-WIN!
