“What are your thoughts on teens using creatine as a sports supplement?”
Google will tell you that teens should not use creatine as a sports supplement under the age of 18, as that’s the generalized answer for most things regarding ‘children’.
However, that’s more from a generalized liability standpoint. There are no specific studies on youth and creatine. But, creatine is by far the most heavily researched sports supplement there is, and it’s all good news. Studies have shown that creatine is safe, effective, and has no side effects.
It’s not so much about age.
If the person has reached puberty, a 16 year old does not have much different physiology than an 18 year old. So why would it be deemed safe for the 18 year old, but not the 16 year old?
I think the issue comes down to responsibility and how you are using creatine. At any age.
I have personally worked with 16 and 17 year olds using creatine as a sports supplement who:
- Are doing the right kind of strength training, under qualified supervision (football coach and/or fitness trainer)
- Their objective is to support optimal growth and performance
- They are incorporating proper sports and recover nutrition
- They are following the dosing guidelines for creatine
I believe what Sean has to say in this article, mirrors my thoughts exactly. He also has some great advice on how to use creatine properly.
Is creatine safe for teens? Yes.
Should every teenager looking to build muscle use it? Nope. Only the responsible ones. 😉
