I’ve worked and played in the fitness and wellness space since my early twenties. That’s over 30 years now, and I’m happy to say, still going strong!
Proudly busting out a 95lb strict press, 55 yo.
Despite all these years in the industry, and over a decade now practicing exclusively as a nutritionist – there’s something that’s always evaded me…
Why is it that some people take the information I (or others) provide them and crush it, thereby achieving truly remarkable transformations, while others… well, just don’t?
Sure, there’s biology. Things like hormone imbalances, gut dysbiosis, and thyroid function can certainly impact our overall metabolism, hunger hormones, etc. But in the big picture, for even the most ‘unwell’ of my clients, it’s a relatively uncommon and insignificant factor in everything.
More than anything, it’s the same ‘obstacles’ I hear over and over again – and admittedly I also experience myself from time to time –
- lack of time
- too busy
- too stressed
- emotional eating
- social life
- temptations all around
- fatigue
- peer pressure
- travelling or vacation
These are the ‘reasons’ that people are derailed from their nutrition plans. These are their excuses for not sticking to the commitments they’ve made to themselves.
But these so-called obstacles are all just a part of real life. They happen to all of us, all of the time. So the BIG question is:
Why are some people able to follow through and implement change – despite real life happening around them?
I’ve researched the shit out of this because I truly want to help people succeed in reaching their goals, in making changes to their nutrition, their health, and their lives.
And this is what I’ve learned.
There is, in fact, this one no-longer a secret ingredient that psychologists and experts in the field have zoned in on that will determine your success more than anything else – more than talent or skill, and when it comes to nutrition, more than any meal plan or set of macros I could provide you.
It’s called grit.
Defined as a combination of passion and perseverance toward long-term goals, grit involves maintaining effort and interest over weeks, months, or even years – despite challenges, failures, and plateaus in progress.
People with grit have a strong sense of purpose and are committed to their objectives, pushing through day to day difficulties without giving up or giving in to life’s common obstacles (like lack of time, stress, popcorn or an argument with your partner).
Successful athletes, military personnel, entrepreneurs, doctors and scientists, and people who’ve recovered from chronic illness exhibit the characteristics of grit. These individuals all share the ability to cope with and balance the demands of life, persist through challenges, and endure hardship without compromising on their goals.
Grit is about staying focused on a long-term goal and continuously working toward it, even when it’s difficult or when there’s chocolate cake in the vicinity.
The good news is that you don’t need not be a physician or olympic athlete to be gritty. Anyone can build grit.
Grit can be learned and practiced and mastered.
We’ve all known that person who seems to have a ton of stress, works two jobs, is going through a divorce or financial troubles… yet somehow they seem to be able to get to the gym regularly, meal prep every weekend, doesn’t depend on alcohol or pizza regularly to cope with life, and as a result, they’re rocking the chiseled high-energy body you want.
And that is why I’ve created GRIT50!
