Chicken again? Fish again? Veggies on your plate looking a little… uninspiring? 😂
Here’s something I’ve believed for years, in my own kitchen and with my clients: one of the biggest obstacles to eating well consistently isn’t willpower. It’s food boredom.
When we start eating “healthy,” our food gets really basic. Plain grilled chicken. Plain rice. Plain broccoli. Day after day.
And then we wonder why we can’t stick with it.
Why I’m all about making healthy food taste (and look) good?
My philosophy has always been simple: your food should taste good and look good. Not as a nice extra, but as a strategy. There are two good reasons.
1. You’ll keep doing what you enjoy
If healthy eating means choking down another boring chicken breast, it won’t last. When your food actually tastes great, you look forward to it, and the habit sticks. Consistency beats perfection every time, and enjoyment [or in the least, absence of misery!) is what drives consistency.
2. Digestion starts before the first bite
This one surprises people. Researchers call it the cephalic phase of digestion: the sight, smell and even the thought of appealing food can trigger your body to start producing saliva, stomach acid and digestive enzymes before the food ever reaches your mouth.
In other words, food that looks and smells good may help prime your body to digest it. I wouldn’t promise that a sauce will transform your gut, but it’s one more reason enjoyment isn’t a frivolous extra. It’s part of how your body handles what you eat.
So yes, I’m all about adding a few extra calories or carbs if it makes your meal something you’ll actually enjoy. It’s worth it.
3 dips and sauces to get you started
A little flavour goes a long way. Here are three simple, clean recipes that turn the same old ingredients into something you look forward to.

Homemade Guacamole
Five ingredients and about 10 minutes. Great on chicken, in a lettuce wrap, or with veggie sticks. The healthy fat in avocado can also help you absorb the carotenoids in colourful veggies like carrots and sweet potatoes.

Cilantro Lime Salsa
Fresh, clean and loaded with flavour, and ready in about 15 minutes. It’s a fantastic way to dress up plain grilled chicken or a salmon fillet without adding much of anything but taste.

Cleaned Up BBQ Sauce
Store-bought BBQ sauce and ketchup are loaded with refined sugar. This version is sweetened with maple syrup and molasses, keeps in the fridge for up to a week, and works as a dipping sauce or a marinade.
